Hearlingo Privacy Policy

Hearlingo is provided by Daichi Ishiguro. This policy explains how the Hearlingo browser extension handles information when you use it to listen to or translate selected webpage text.

Information the extension handles

  • Selected text and nearby context. When Hearlingo is enabled, it detects completed selections on supported webpages and text fields to show its panel. Selections are limited to 2,000 characters. Automatic language detection may also read up to 2,000 characters of nearby text from the same paragraph or text field when the selected text is ambiguous. Text you select can contain personal or sensitive information. Password fields are excluded.
  • Language and voice information. Hearlingo uses the selected language, webpage language hints, Chrome's interface language, operating-system category, and voice metadata supplied by Chrome to choose compatible features and voices.
  • Preferences. The extension saves whether it is enabled, automatic-action choices, source and target languages, listening speed, and voice preferences in Chrome's local extension storage. These preferences are not synced by Hearlingo.
  • Interaction and temporary technical information. Selection, pointer, keyboard, and extension-control events are used to show and operate the panel. Chrome supplies sender URLs, tab and document identifiers, and other message metadata so the extension can validate requests and control the correct reading. The extension does not create a browsing-history or interaction log. Temporary speech state includes request identifiers, language, timing, and the associated tab/document; it does not include the selected text or a page URL.

How information is used

Information is used to show the selection panel, detect language, provide speech and translation, remember your preferences, and keep playback controls associated with the correct reading. Automatic speech and translation are off by default. Enabling an automatic option permits that action for future completed selections. Language detection and translation-availability checks may happen when the panel opens, before you press Play or Translate.

The extension does not use this information for advertising, analytics, sale, profiling, credit decisions, or purposes unrelated to these features. It does not operate an account system or developer-controlled server that receives page text.

Chrome, speech providers, and translation

Selected text and language-detection context are processed through Chrome's language-detection API. When you request speech, or enable Auto play, selected text is passed to Chrome's text-to-speech system. Hearlingo selects voices that Chrome reports as non-remote and native and filters out extension-provided voices in the current voice list. Chrome resolves the speech provider later, so this filter cannot guarantee exclusively local delivery if the provider changes. Your browser and speech provider's handling is also subject to their own policies.

When you request translation, or enable Auto translate, selected text is passed to Chrome's built-in on-device Translator. Chrome may download language packs; these downloads and the browser's own network services are managed by Chrome. Hearlingo does not send the text to a developer-operated translation service or fall back to an external translation server.

If you click Copy translation, the result is written to your system clipboard. Clipboard retention and any clipboard synchronization depend on your operating system and settings. Hearlingo does not read your clipboard.

Storage and retention

Selected text, nearby context, and translated results are processed in memory; they are not written to the extension's persistent storage or text logs. Current page content can remain in the panel's memory until the selection is replaced, the panel is dismissed, the extension is disabled, or the page is closed/reloaded.

To support Replay, the background worker can retain the most recent reading in memory while it is active and for up to five minutes after completion. A newer reading, Stop or the close control, disabling Hearlingo, uncertain audio status, or a worker restart clears this replay buffer. Voice previews use fixed product samples and do not add selected text to the replay buffer.

Preferences remain in local extension storage until changed or the extension is removed. Temporary speech coordination metadata is kept in Chrome's session storage, cleared when the reading is resolved or the browser session ends. It may remain during uncertain audio status so the extension can avoid overlapping speech. Downloaded language packs are managed separately by Chrome.

Your choices

You can change saved preferences and automatic actions in the toolbar popup, disable Hearlingo using its master switch, restrict its site access through Chrome's extension controls, or uninstall it to remove its local extension data. Close or reload the page to discard its current panel contents. Stop playback before uninstalling; if audio status remains uncertain, restart Chrome. Clear your clipboard separately if you copied a translation.

Hearlingo does not create its own encrypted database. Its local storage is protected by Chrome and your operating-system account. Other software with access to your device or browser profile may be able to access local data.

Limited Use

Hearlingo's use of information received from Google APIs follows the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including its Limited Use requirements. Information is used only to provide the extension's disclosed features. It is not sold, used for advertising, or used to determine creditworthiness or lending eligibility.

This policy website

The Hearlingo website and policy pages do not add analytics, tracking scripts, or cookies. Website hosting is separate from the extension's handling of selected webpage text.

When you visit a Hearlingo website served through Cloudflare, Cloudflare processes website request information, which may include your IP address, system information, and traffic data, to provide its services. See the Cloudflare Privacy Policy for its handling of website visitor information. The website does not receive text you select on other webpages through the extension.

A copy of this policy is hosted on GitHub Pages. GitHub logs visitors' IP addresses for security purposes, including visits made without signing in. See the GitHub Privacy Statement for GitHub's handling of website visitor information.

If you email for support, your email address and the information you choose to include are used to respond to your request. Email is handled through the publisher's Gmail account and the email services involved in delivery. Avoid including sensitive webpage text in a support request.
